What does “Bounce Rate” mean in Google Analytics?

In Google Analytics, there is a metric titled “Bounce Rate”, which tends to throw people off 😉 . Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to understand.

Bounce Rate = percentage of people who came to your website, viewed only one page, then left your website.

Bounce Rate Example 1:
Let’s say you do a Google search for “how to use google analytics”. You click on the first listing and go to the listed website. But, you can tell as soon as you get to the website that it isn’t really what you were looking for. So, you click on the “back” button to look for another website that might suite your needs better. Since you have only viewed one page on that website, you were counted as a “bounce”.

Let’s say the next website you click on is exactly what you were looking for. When you get there, everything is organized out clearly, and you are able to click through that site to find the information that you’re looking for. In this case, since you have viewed 2+ pages in the same visit, you are not counted in the “bounce rate”.

Bounce Rate Example 2:
In contrast to the first example, people also leave you site even when they are very happy with the content you have provided. Let’s say that you do the same search for “how to use google analytics”. The page you wind up on is exactly what you wanted, and answers your question completely. You don’t need to view other pages – the article you land on takes care of your original need. So, you leave (hopefully a happy Google Analytics pro) after only viewing one page. Guess what?! You’re still a “bounce”, but you’re a happy bounce. 🙂

Alright – told you that was easy! If you have any clarification, feel free to leave a comment below, or you can reach me by filling out the form on the right. If you’re just getting started with Google Analytics, I’d recommend reading “What’s Happening on Your Website” for more information.
